Family, for us, has always been centered around food and wine, in the Napa Valley.

Our life in the Valley started in the vineyards in 1971 on land that would become our winery, S. Anderson Vineyard. The winery developed a bit of a cult following over the years, sometimes for the wine, sometimes for the epic parties solely catered by the current matriarch of the family, Tracy, in the winery’s cave.

After 30 years, the family decided it was time to move on to other passions. In 2004, John and Tracy founded a Belgian style chocolate shop and kitchen. Corny as it seems, it was inspired after watching the movie Chocolat at the local theater. The shop’s first employees were daughters, Christina and Caroline. Counter help wasn’t available that first week and so they took charge of the front even though they were only 15 and 13 at the time. Later, shortly after college, they both joined the family team full time.

Woodhouse Chocolate is routinely ranked among the top Chocolatiers in the US, on the pages of Consumer Reports, gracing Oprah’s List several times, and being featured on Best Thing I Ever Ate for our S’mores.

Next came the formation of a competition BBQ team after John watched an episode of BBQ Pitmasters. He remarked to Tracy, “watching this may change our lives”. Can you tell we’re easily excited when it comes to food? Again, the whole family played a part. Going at it with our usual passion and veracity we made our way consistently to the top 5 ranked teams in California and earned a spot at the American Royal, the world championship held in Kansas City, three times. Tracy even competed on a BBQ episode of Chopped, set quite literally in their backyard in St. Helena. 

To say that we’re a passionate bunch would be an understatement. We’ve been lucky enough to be able to pursue our interests as a family, now with Caroline and Christina running the show.
